Assessment Procedures

Determining whether your application conforms to §1194.21(c) of Section 508 is a relatively quick and simple process. Utilize the following steps to perform your test:

  • Open the application to be tested.
  • Navigate through the application using a screen reader, Microsoft built-in magnifier, or Microsoft Narrator. Note if controls are spoken or magnified as focus changes.
  • Check whether menu commands change state (i.e., highlighted, bolded, flashing) when focused upon.
  • If using a screen enlargement program (i.e., Zoom Text), check to see if it follows the focus as it changes.
  • To facilitate remediation, note any instances where a well-defined on-screen indication is not provided.
  • There may be tools to automate this procedure. Since all twelve provisions can not be measured in an automated way, manual test procedures must accompany any automated processes used to ensure complete testing is performed, and eliminate inaccurate results.
