Provision G

Background

§1194.21(g) of Section 508 states that:

“Applications shall not override user-selected contrast and color selections and other individual display attributes.”

Most operating systems have system-wide settings that designate features such as color, contrast, font, keyboard/mouse repeat rate and sensitivity. Under normal circumstances, these settings are recognized and used by all computer software; system-wide settings often need to be personalized in order to meet the needs of people with disabilities. If an application should override a customized setting, the software may be inoperable for users who have special display needs.

The purpose of this provision is to ensure that all applications allow a user to customize system-wide, display-specific settings.

Testing your application for conformance to Provision G, and remediating any issues identified, are relatively simple procedures.

Select the Next button to find out how to assess whether your application conforms to this provision.
