Over several years, the National Park Service has customized a media player which aims to be as accessible as possible. It supports multi-track audio and video, allowing a user to toggle between standard, described, and American Sign Language versions of a single video; it supports captioning in over 10 languages; and has been through several rounds of user testing with people who are blind / low vision. The code for this player is available on GitHub.

Making Information and Communications Technology (ICT) accessible is a core requirement of Section 508, yet ensuring video content meets compliance standards remains a significant challenge for many federal agencies. In this practical, insight-driven session, the Federal Transit Administration (FTA) Section 508 Compliance Officer, Kimberly Castillo, and video production expert, Mike Gower, will share and demonstrate the detailed, hands-on process FTA implemented to remediate their informational videos for full Section 508 conformance.
Attendees will learn how FTA managed the remediation process, focusing on:
- The Compliance Workflow: A step-by-step process for identifying and fixing accessibility issues in synchronized media.
- Technical Deep Dive: Addressing essential compliance elements such as audio description, closed captions, and descriptive text for non-speech sounds and music, as required by federal law and WCAG 2.1 AA standards.
- Vendor Collaboration: The importance of integrating accessibility requirements with external video production teams early in the development lifecycle.
- A Disability-First Approach: Applying "pure attention to detail and logic" by putting oneself "in the shoes of a person with different disabilities" to ensure improved clarity and usability across various impairments.
This session offers a valuable, candid look at a successful program and is ideal for 508 coordinators, content creators, and acquisition professionals seeking proven strategies to advance digital equity within their own agencies.

Creating accessible digital experiences requires more than policies and tools: it requires people, partnerships, and followthrough. This highly interactive networking session is designed specifically for Section 508 Program Managers to make meaningful connections, exchange resources, and leave with clear next steps.
Facilitated by Amy Nieves of the U.S. Access Board, participants will take part in three guided networking activities focused on sharing successes, expanding nongovernment partnerships, and scheduling real followup conversations. Whether you are new to your role or a longtime program manager, this session is designed to help you strengthen your network and turn conversations into action.
Come prepared to participate, connect, and leave with new contacts and meetings on your calendar. Participants are highly encouraged to bring at least 5-10 business cards, or copies of agency resources, or "swag" items from their agency such as pens, or other promotional items if available.
